1. Introduction

Using Basic Statistics in the Behavioral and Social Sciences, Fifth Edition, by Annabel Ness Evans, presents introductory statistics in a practical, conceptual, and humorous way, reducing the anxiety that many students experience in introductory courses. Avoiding complex notation and derivation, the book focuses on helping readers develop an understanding of the underlying logic of statistics. Practical Focus on Research boxes engage students with realistic applications of statistics, and end-of-chapter exercises ensure student comprehension. This exciting new edition includes a greater number of realistic and engaging global examples within the social and behavioral sciences, making it ideal for use within many departments or in interdisciplinary settings.

Annabel Ness Evans received her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Alberta. She is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Concordia University College of Alberta. She teaches courses in statistics and directs the B.A. programs in psychology. Her other books are Principles of Behavior Analysis, co-authored with Lyle Grant (PH, 1994) and Methods in Psychological Research, Third Edition (SAGE, 2013). She also does outside consulting which includes graphic design and statistical analysis.

I recently rented this book for Stats 1 at Los Angeles Pierce College for Professor Lim's class. This book was really clear and helpful- but having an awesome teacher really makes the difference.

I originally took Math 227 (the stats for Science majors- like Chemistry and Biology) and failed, so I tried Stats 1 (the stats for Social science majors- like Psych and Sociology) and passed.

Very good book on a difficulty and dry subject, making it more accesible.
